This vital portrait of neighbor and friend Melissa exudes creativity, intelligence, humor and life in the style of the sitter. It was my great pleasure to paint her portrait. I smiled at her side-eye grin every day. Watch it come into being in this video.
This unusually formatted oil on canvas was inspired by a snapshot of a friend's granddaughter, as the child held a spontaneous pose on a large rock at her side and asked to be recorded. Instantly upon seeing the photo, I realized the potential to expand upon the fun through enlarging the scope of the 8 year old's endeavor by turning the rock into a cliff face within a receding landscape beneath an active sky with canopy of stars and cosmic debris. The scale of her achievement increased exponentially into a metaphor for all ages, yet especially for the young for whom the mountain tops are usually farthest away. The 48 X 12 inch canvas was perfect for emphasizing the long reach of a goal, being dramatically attained.
Beauty and personality inspired this 16 X 12 inch oil portrait on panel. The woman's luscious dark curls beckoned boisterously, and the rich color of the sliced roots on the wall behind her made a further compelling mix. Her lovely smile continues to reflect intelligence and wit, offering much to admire in this portrait of broad appeal.
People have a lot to say even when silent and portrayed in oils by an artist. Enjoy watching Gino's relaxed attitude exude the wisdom of elders as it evolves in paint.
All ages are fun for me to paint. The world has infinite perspectives. This one is just forming ...

Dreams and memories are soft companions. As "Judy" coalesced, so did the Venice shoreline behind her in this magical multidimensional work commissioned by her loving husband, who wished to honor her and her dearest affinities. Thus, a fabulously detailed background of Venice is pulled into being with the materialization of "Judy."
Gino's outfits are always full of diverse textures, patterns and colors, making them fun to paint. He is a personable conversationalist whose visit over the winter inspired this painting.
Exemplifying the true spirit of community participation and support, this portrait of Bob in action was a great way for me to become further immersed in portraiture.
It was as much fun to imagine the meadowland she wished around her as it was to paint it into being.
